I see you…
I met you standing in line at the grocery store. I drove past you waiting at the bus stop. I walked passed you in the hall on parent-teacher night at school. I see you in the car next to me at the stop light. I’ve met you at work, the hair salon, and at the doctor’s office.
It doesn’t matter where I met you. The point is, I recognize you… I recognize me in you. I recognize the sadness behind the smile. I see the forced smile on your face masking the tiredness in your eyes.
Yours is the face of perseverance – that inner knowing that you will trudge on, in spite of the struggle.
Yours is the face of someone who is tired before the day begins. Someone who knows that today is going to be an emotional struggle between your Have-To-Do List and the desire to crawl back under the covers and wish the world would just stop.
On one level, the struggle is of the utmost importance. It’s the desire for some goal or outcome that is more important than the pain. And yet, on another level, the goal almost doesn’t matter. It’s immaterial to the struggle.
I recognize the hopelessness behind the pain. I recognize the thoughts in your head triggering both the hopelessness and the pain that you may not even be aware of.
Maybe it’s the hidden belief “I’ll never be good enough” that is causing the pain.
Maybe it’s the thought – the one that never quite reaches the surface of consciousness – that says “my dreams are out of reach.”
On one level, it doesn’t matter what that negative belief is… just that it drains your energy and saps your strength.
Regardless of what that nagging voice that whispers in the quiet moments throughout your day is saying, I recognize the determined tension in your jaw… the sadness touching at the corner of your eyes, the tiredness that makes it difficult to laugh or smile.
I know why you have to have the television or music playing at all times, and why silence is unbearable. I know why you always reach for the “feel good” movies with the guaranteed happy outcome. I know why you are more comfortable talking about your family or job than about your own goals and dreams.
I see you pushing down the rising sense of panic that sometimes seems to overtake you for no reason. And I know why you relentlessly analyze every word or gesture from that loved one that doesn’t know how to tell you how they feel.
I recognize the concern in your eyes, and the rising sense of dread that you strive to suppress.
But I also see the amazing things happening in your life that you are too busy or too tired to notice!
I know how you go the extra mile to make sure that those you love are safe and know they are loved. I know that your hypervigilance and insecurity demands that of you.
I know that your sadness has led you to a profound sense of gratitude for even the little things in your life. I know how you appreciate and simultaneously feel guilty by the bloom on the neglected rose bush in the garden.
I’ve felt the combination of frustration and joy you feel when a gaggle of giggling kids drag a muddy dog across your just cleaned kitchen floor.
I know how your sense of worthlessness leads to a renewed determination to double down every day to prove yourself, in spite of the anxiety that comes from not knowing if you will be successful.
I know these things because I AM you! I’ve lived your pain. I’ve walked your insecurities. I’ve breathed your fear.
I also know that many gifts come from the struggles you’ve faced and overcome.
I know that if you were to see your life from my eyes, you would see the how the seeds of your anxiety have bloomed.
And mostly, I know that it’s possible to go through every day without fear and anxiety.
It’s possible to still have energy at the end of the day because you let go of the struggle.
It’s possible to reboot your brain so that the same events result in a different experience!
And that’s the biggest reboot of all that I wish for you… I wish for you to see that the same events CAN result in a beautiful experience.
It happens when you shift your beliefs… when you stop judging yourself and others.. and when you learn to create your life on purpose.
If you’re ready to move beyond the struggle and reprogram problems into opportunity, then I can help!
