Fear is a powerful emotion… and it serves a useful purpose.
It keeps us alive… It keeps us from doing stupid and embarrassing things.
Fear motivates and spurs us to action when our life is in danger.
However, Fear is not a pleasant emotion. (I think that counts as an understatement).
So as a result, you’ve spent your entire life trying to avoid Fear…
You blame and complain…
You do anything except face it. Me too!
Until I learned these simple – but rarely talked about mindset strategies
Your problem isn’t Fear – It’s that you don’t understand how to use it to propel yourself forward.
When you hit a place in business or life where you start to feel fearful, you shut down.
You start to play solitaire on the computer.
You start rearranging your inbox.
You find yourself doing all sorts of unproductive work, instead of facing the situation head on.
So – let’s break down the mindset you need to cultivate to make Fear work FOR you… and not TO you!
1. Fear is almost NEVER what we think it’s about…
It’s not that you are afraid to call that troublesome client, or put out that new program. That’s not what’s making you fearful… Fear ALWAYS is reduced to “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not safe”… ALWAYS… so peek behind the curtain of your mind. Ask yourself what you are really afraid of and you will discover that behind the activity, is one of these 2 fears.
2. Fear is almost NEVER real…
Unless you are about to be hit by a bus or chased by a lion on the Serengeti, Fear is ALWAYS a PERCEIVED threat – not a REAL threat. You are taking past events and projecting an outcome into the future. When you stuff down the fear, you are actually creating the very thing you are afraid of. If you don’t take action, you will be perceived as not good enough… or you will put yourself in a less-safe situation. Error on the side of INSPIRED ACTION. Otherwise Fear becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
3. Fear is a call to action in disguise!
Fear is preventive medicine – if you can learn to listen without judgment and take action! If you are afraid to pick up the phone and call that client, your fear is a sign that you need to do just that. Lean into it. Recognize that it’s trying to tell you something important. Your intuition is calling you to take action.
So instead of stuffing the feeling down and playing solitaire on the computer, what you need to do is to take action IMMEDIATELY.
FEAR is your intuition guiding you to take preventative action!
And as soon as you do – regardless of the outcome – the fear will almost always disintegrate!
I know this seems counterintuitive – like most spiritual wisdom.
Try this the next time you feel that urge to watch TV or read the news instead of doing your work.
And leave me a note below. Let me know if this worked for you!
